Summary
An Italian ebony, fruitwood inlaid and boxwood intaglio cabinet, in Renaissance style, by Ferri and Bartolozzi, second half of nineteenth century, Siena. It has a moulded frieze set above a pair of doors, each inlaid with heavily carved boxwood panels, a further two panels of the same type are set into the sides. The door panels are carved in a classical style with a central disc element within which a single seated human figure faces inwards, the left door with a man and the right door a woman. The discs are surrounded by a heavily carved foliate and bird motif with a pair of cherub forms sitting on the top of each. The sliding top is inlaid with grotesques. Inside is a section containing four drawers and concealing a recess containing intaglios. The sides are decorated with classical vases and birds and the back with the Gibbs' coat-of-arms and the motto; En Dios mi Amparo y Esperanza. Inside is a paper label reading; Ferri e Bartolozzi, scultori in legno ed in avorio, Sienna. There is also their trade card loose in a drawer. The key tab is labelled; Sienna Cabinet.
