Full description
A silver casket, the interior now lined to hold cigars, supported upon four scroll bracket feet and with engraved decoration throughout, pierced centre and knob to the cover, and leaf pattern finial to each corner; the interior with presentation inscription from the Sultan of Brunei, 1952. Antique Persian. The hallmark has not been identified. Despite extensive research using persons or organisations, involved in precious metals, very little definitive information was obtained. Only one reply had an opinion on the box and they said ‘What a splendid Islamic design. Undoubtedly it was made in Dubai and I should imagine that the hallmark is Dubai’s’ This does support the Chartwell position that it is ‘Antique Persian’. In the 1970 a museum was built by Omar Ali Saifuddin C.M.G. Sultan of Brunei in honour of Winston Churchill. The museum was eventually replaced in 1992 by the Royal Regalia Building.
