Full description
In 1942, Winston allowed his cousin Clare to sculpt his head. As he never got up before twelve noon (even during the war), she came to him in the morning while he was still in bed. He used to sleep in the underground shelter, which had become the night-time annexe of the prime minister's residence at 10 Downing Street, doing his work and receiving guests from his bed. Clare grew frustrated trying to capture him, as he refused to keep still or to give up his cigar. She was ready to abandon the project, but one morning managed to seize a few uninterrupted hours and finished the piece very quickly. Winston wrote warmly that she had produced a very fine piece of work’; he would certainly like to have a replica of the head in bronze' and would “send a cheque straight away."
