An oak winding easel, English, late 19th/early 20th century, possibly by Windsor and Newton, with two horizontal supports to hold the canvas top and bottom, of adjustable height using a long worm wheel screw to the rear and iron and beech winding handle to the front, the handle protruding from a lower shelf below where the canvas would sit and with a raised flat front, on two pairs of angled legs, each pair joined to the horizontal base slats, with four brass and leather bound castors, a screw stop to the front right horizontal bar. One of Sir Winston Churchill's easels.
Provenance
Chartwell was purchased by Winston Churchill in 1922 and for the next 40 years it was the family home. Presented to the National Trust in 1946, Winston and Clementine Churchill continued to live there until 1965 when it was relinquished to the management of the National Trust. Much of the contents of Chartwell were accepted by the Treasury in payment of death duty and retained in the house. Lady Churchill also gifted many pieces and others are on loan from the Churchill family.
