“Sir Winston Churchill, in the Cabinet Room at 10, Downing Street yesterday, was offered and formally accepted this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature, which is worth £12,000. ‘I think it is a very great honour to receive from the Swedish Academy for Literature this distinction gained among all the other writers of the world,’ Sir Winston Churchill said. “It is a literary distinction – I am particularly proud of that.’ Sir Winston Churchill said he had received several honours which were national, but this was the first he had received which is international in its character.” Lady Churchill received the Prize in Stockholm on Churchill’s behalf in December 1953.
