Summary
Sir Winston's walking stick, a straight malacca cane with gold top engraved "W.O.HOZIER, CARLTON CLUB" and "Winston S. Churchill, 2 SUSSEX SQUARE, HYDE PARK" with a rubber tip, the gift of WSC's brother in law. Formerly part of the Heirloom Collection.
Full description
Churchill purchased 2 Sussex Square in November 1919, and lived there from February 1920 to 1924, finally selling the property in February 1925. It sustained irreparable bomb damage in March 1941 and was subsequently demolished. Bill Hozier, Churchill’s brother-in-law committed suicide by gunshot in a Paris hotel room on 15 April 1921. He was aged just 33 at the time of his death. After the First World War Hozier had retired from the Navy and gone into business. Unfortunately gambling led him into financial difficulties. In later years Churchill lost this walking stick and gave the man, J. Brattell, who found it in Hyde Park a £3 reward for its return.
