Marks and inscriptions
Reverse: "The Story Behind This Portrait: This three dimensional portrait, hand carved on Klobbel wood, is the work of two Finnish artists, K. Riseannen and T. Alikyla, who developed their hobby during the Rusco-Finnish War in 1939, with General Mannerheim as their first subject. From a photograph enlarged to the desired size, contours are first sketched on and then carved into the wood, using only the regular Finnish trench knife called the Puka. To acheive the unique and life-like quality the completed wood sculpture possesses, the artists have applied color[sic.] or shading by means of burning with a small torch. The Wall Street Journal is honored[sic.] to present this portrait to its good friend, Winston Churchill".
