Summary
LOUIS PRANG, Frontal view of the White House, Washington D.C. gouache with mother-of-pearl inlay c. 1870. Circular in an ornate gilded wood/gesso frame - with a typed dedicatory note on reverse "as from the millions of obscure Canadians who Thank God... for him" and a biographical note on the artist.

Reverse: Typed note (in poor condition): I beg that Mr. Churchill accept this very small souvenir in the Xmas Spirit offered.... and not from an individual but just as from the millions of obscure Canadians who Thank God... for him. Its merit is not as an art piece but rather that it is by Louis Prang founder of Xmas cards in America.. and also first to use make and sell mother-of-pearl inlay illumination pictures in America. This was his first attempt... The White House... done about 1870. Altho [sic] he died famous Prang made and sold these door to door".
