One of 12 Flintlock fusils or short muskets and bayonets for militia use, based on the 1796 Heavy Dragoon Pattern carbine, English, c1820; together with 11 (1 missing) iron bayonets made by Stephen Hill of Birmingham, c1830 -40. Purchased in 1831 for use with Kedleston fusils (KED/A/15a - 15e). Round iron barrel with mouldings at the breech. The breech stamped with Birmingham proof marks (post 1813 type) and other unidentified marks. The muzzle with a bayonet lug (also serves as a sight). The barrel secured to the stock by 3 barrel pins. Some iron ramrods missing. Barrel lengths 69.2cm - 70.2cm Calibre 19mm. Walnut three-quarter length stock with the initials TP (unidentified) stamped behind the trigger guard tang. Brass furniture comprising; butt-plate, trigger guard with sling swivel, ribbon side-plate, fore-end cap and 3 ramrod pipes. Sling swivel at muzzle end of forestock. Plain flintlock, the lockplate of rounded cross section, the plate stamped WARRANTED. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall lengths 108.5cm - 110.5cm. Bayonets Iron blade of triangular section, the top face flat, the other two side faces with fullers.The tip of the blade slightly curving outwards. Off-set socket, its base with a reinforcing collar, cut with a bridge to passage of the barrel lug. The blade stamped S. Hill. Length 40.5cm Socket hole 2.5cm diameter. Overall length 50cm.

Purchased in 1987 by the National Trust from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
