Summary
Mat or cover. Rectangular shaped with a ground of brown velvet with applique and embroidery in metal threads, colour wrapped threads in green, blue and orange. The main field has a symmetrical design including stylised flower heads and scrolling leaves within a strapwork frame. An outer border of repeating flower heads and stems with leaves. The embroidery is backed with a coarse linen (seen through damaged area). The edge is decorated with a block coloured fringe in blue and gold. Lined with green glazed cotton (appears to be later). Found in Burmese Poongyi Box No.441 (V & A Catalogue 1927). Condition: In worn condition with much loss of the velvet pile. Damage across the central area with breaks and loss in the velvet ground. The embroidery has some surface damage and loose threads. There is some loss of embroidery across the central area. The surrounding fringe is missing from a large section along both sides (approx. 800mm) and at one end.
