Summary
Prayer mat? Rectangular shaped cover with a central area of silk shot velvet (originally black shot with blue, now brown). An outer edge of decorative embroidery has been applied onto the velvet. The embroidery is densely worked in silk floss in alternating gold and purple colours. The edges are cut out shapes in architectural form. Lining of brown glazed cotton twill with an earlier lining of black glazed cotton evident beneath. Found in Burmese Poongyi Box No.441 (V & A Catalogue 1927). Condition: Generally fair condition. Badly creased and distorted. Two holes with tacks at one edge from display. Tear along the same top edge. Tear in the velvet has been repaired. Few spots of mould visible on the velvet. Lining generally sound, some fading, torn in one corner with few stitched repairs and areas of loss.
