Summary
Indian (Manipur state) shawl of magenta coloured raw silk. It has a narrow border insert strip of yellow silk down both long edges, embroidered with a repeating pattern in purple, orange, green, black and white. Worked in chain stitch and satin stitch. Both ends have a deep border of green silk embroidered in brightly coloured silks with a repeating design in orange, red, purple, blue, green, black and white. The central area of magenta silk also has embroidery stemming from the corners and across the centre, worked in a floral design. Style and embroidery typical of a particular area in India. Both ends of the shawl are finished with a netting of magenta coloured silk with rows of tufted silk in bright colours e.g. green, yellow, pink, red, black and white, with very long fringed ends. Found in Burmese Poongyi Box No.441 (V & A Catalogue 1927). Condition: Generally good condition with bright colouring. One half faded where it has been folded on display. Long fringed ends tangled. Otherwise sound. Badly creased all over from storage.
