Summary
Marble and Sienese marble, chimneypiece, unknown maker, unknown date, before 1908. The chimneypiece carved of white marble, with inverse breakfront moulded shelf, a frieze inlaid with vertical bands of Siena marble, two oval paterae and relief urns on the endblocks. The marble relief panel at centre depicts a bacchante in a chariot led by two putti riding lions. The bacchante holds a thyrsus and her robes billow in the wind. The jambs are rendered as ionic pilasters inlaid with vertical bands of Siena marble, on block feet. Installed in 1908 by George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, KG, GCSI, GCIE, PC, FRS, FBA (1859–1925); see ‘Notes of Lord C of K’, compiled by Leslie Harris, Muniments Room, Kedleston Hall: ‘I also substituted an old Adam mantlepiece bought in London for a poor stove one in the State Dressing Room’ (i.e. The Wardrobe).
