Summary
A carved and pierced shisham hardwood rectangular table, by Barkat Ali of Jalandhar, India, circa 1900. The table is rectangular with pierced geometric shapes on the table top and at the sides making intricate arched motifs. This table was on display at the India Exhibition in Delhi 1902-1903, where it was bought by the Viceroy. The table is illustrated in the catalogue 'Jalandhar - The wood-varvers of this town have developed a style of their own that resembles that of the United Provinces...a rectangular table made by Barkat Ali of Jalandhar which has been purchased by His Excellency the Viceroy' (page 108), (Christie's entry).
Provenance
This table was on display at the India Exhibition in Delhi 1902-1903, where it was bought by the Viceroy. Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
