Summary
An Indian wooden box with inlaid bone. The inlaid pattern is a foliage and palmette design. The interior is made from several interlocking trays that have been lined with maroon velvet and which have a bone decoration. There is a secret compartment at the base of the box. 'An Indian wood casket inlaid in bone with spiralling leafy vine and palmettes' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
