Summary
An inlaid hardwood cabinet with mother-of-pearl, Chinese, 19th century. The cabinet is made up of various sized panels that contain inlay decorations of narrative scenes and flowers. The central two doors are hinged and have pierced foliage carving onto which there is a panel that contains a scene in mother-of-pearl. 'A Chinese wood cabinet inlaid in mother-of-pearl with figures, buildings and ships' (Christie's entry).
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
