Summary
A silver casket with gilt decoration from Tanjore, Madras. The lid has a repoussé design of a Shiva temple, under which, there is an inscription. The body of the casket has Hindu deities that are named and at either side, the Curzon cipher. 'A partly gilt silver casket, containing an address from Tanjore - Madras' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
