Summary
A hardwood table cabinet, Chinese, 19th century. At the top, it has two drawers; the carving is based on textile designs. The two doors have openwork carving in the shape of bamboo, cherry blossom and willow foliage; once opened, they reveal two figures, possibly Daoist Immortals, in shale inlay. On the back of the cabinet, there are several rows of Chinese inscription in mother-of-pearl inlay. 'A wood cabinet applied in shale with Immortals' (Christie's entry).
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
Marks and inscriptions
Two inscriptions in Chinese on the back of the cabinet in mother-of-pearl inlay.
