Summary
A sandalwood casket from Tinnevelly, Southern India. The wood carving has a red velvet background. The lid depicts a Hindu temple with figures in gilt. Around the sides there are a series of Hindu figures depicted under arches. Inside the lid, the royal coat of arms is carved in ivory and placed in the centre of a geometric carving. It was made to contain an address from the Municipal Councillors of Tinnevelly. 'Casket of carved and pierced sandalwood, containing an address from the District of Tinnevelly' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
