Summary
A sandalwood casket from Mysore. It contains openwork carving of deities, mythical animals, lions, deer and birds amongst a swirling floral design; On the lid, there are three deities in medallions, they are; Hanuman, Krishna and Lakshmi (?). There is a plaque in brass that reads; BANGALORE 1900. The interior is made of blue velvet and silk. It was made for containing an address. 'A pierced and carved sandalwood casket containing an address - Bangalore, Mysore' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
