Summary
A sandalwood casket from Madura. It is intricately carved with a depiction of a Hindu temple on the lid. Around the sides there are a series of figures (these may be Hindu planet deities but will need confirmation). The legs are made in the shape of elephant heads. It was made to contain an address from the Municipal Councillors of Madura. 'A carved sandalwood casket containing an address from the City of Madura' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
