Summary
Burmese riding whip. It is made from rhinoceros hide that is made into a tapered shape and covered in silver wire. The handle is made from a sheet of silver that has chiselled borders of geometric patterns. Possibly made in Loi lou. 'A Burmese rhinoceros-hide riding-whip enclosed by silver network with silver handle - from Loi-lou' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
