Summary
A wooden shrine containing an ivory figure of Sarasvati, from Mysore. One of Sarasvati's attributes is as goddess of music and she is often depicted playing a sitar. There is a peacock sitting in front of the deity, this is Sarasvati's mount. The shrine is made of wood with ivory discs and wooden bells. 'Throne or Shrine of carved wood, enriched with ivory discs; it contains an ivory figure of Sarasvati. Southern Indian (Mysore)'
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
