Summary
A Japanese hairpin (kogai) made from tortoiseshell. It has two long broader rectangular shapes and either side, with a narrower central section. The centre has a piece of paper with a row of Chinese characters. 'a tortoiseshell hairpin' (Christie's entry).
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
Marks and inscriptions
There is a piece of paper adhered to the centre of the hairpin with has a row of Chinese characters.
