Summary
A Japanese hairpin. Slim metal pin with two prongs in black-coloured metal. It has a shell disc with carved vase and reed decoration and the artist's character. The tip is in the shape of an ear-scrapper. 'Japanese writing materials; and five hairpins' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
