Summary
A Japanese hairpin (kogai). One end has an oblong shape in glass with leaf pattern applied in gilt; the other side is made from bone with ancient characters carved into it. 'Japanese writing materials; and five hairpins' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
Marks and inscriptions
Paper with Japanese characters printed in blue adhered to the centre of the hairpin. Ancient characters carved into the hairpin.
