Summary
A seated figure of Jizo (Kshitigarbha). This deity is particularly popular in Japan, where this figure was made. He is traditionally represented wearing priest's clothes and holding a staff in his right hand and a sacred jewel of Buddhism in his left (missing). He is often considered the overseer of hell and is the Master of rebirth in the six realms (Samsara), they are divided into the realms of; humans, animals, gods, warlike beings known as ashuras, hungry ghosts and hell. Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
