Summary
A Japanese shrine with lacquer and gilt decoration. It contains twenty-one figures including; the four directional guardians, Samantabhadra (on elephant back), Manjushri (on lion back), Fudo-Myo, Kongo-yasha, Daikoku, various Kannon, two Buddhas and an ancestor tablet. In the centre there is a monk with red and gilt paint. In his right hand, he seems to be holding a sutra scroll. The monk has a prominent position in the shrine as importance is placed on the various lineages between the Buddhist sects. '[A Japanese lacquered wood shrine with gilt brass mounts, the interior with a figure of Buddha] Another, larger, carved with many figures' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
