Summary
A Japanese portable shrine containing a standing figure of Bodhisattva. The shrine is made from gilt lacquer with brass mounts and hinges. The figure of Bodhisattva, possibly Sho-Kannon (Avalokitesvara) is made from clay and stands on a gilt lotus pedastal and has a metal mandola. A Bodhisattva is someone who has reached enlightenment but stays on this earth to save all beings from suffering. The figure holds a lotus it is probably Padmapani. Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
