Summary
A cloisonné vase dating from the Qing period (1644 - 1911). It has a peony motif design on pale blue ground. The peony was the favourite blossom of the imperial court for centuries but it was the Qing Empress Dowager Cixi (1835 - 1908) who named it the national flower of China. Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
