Full description
Indian flintlock rifle, probably from the Sind region, c1810. Octagonal iron barrel of Damascus twist construction, rifled with 7 grooves. Rear peep-sight incorporated into a rairsed flange formed at the breech, the muzzle with a blade fore-sight. The barrel retained to the stock by 20 decorated brass barrel bands. The ramrod missing. Barrel length 112cm Calibre 8mm. Wooden full-stock, the curving butt of Sind-form and inlaid with mother-of -pearl and brass pellets. The fore-stock overlaid with decorative brass sheet. Engraved iron trigger guard. Fitted with 2 iron sling swivels and a leather sling.The muzzle end of the stock with a 2-pronged folding rest. Flintlock with ring-neck cock. The lockplate engraved with an imitation of "rampant Lion" trademark of the East India Company. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length 148.5m circa 1850.

Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
