Full description
Indian percussion rifle, from the Sind region, c1850. Round iron barrel of Damascus twist construction,rifled with 8 groove, and having a flared muzzle. The muzzle damascened ib gold, the barrel decorated with gold panels. The breech formed with a raised flange and incorporating rear sight; the muzzle with a bead fore-sight. The barrel retained to stock by 5 silver barrel bands (1 band with sling swivel). Iron ramrod. Length 96.5cm Calibre 14mm. Wooden full-stock, the curving Sind-form butt overlaid with silver panels. Iron trigger guard. Fitted with a silver sling swivel. Percussion lock with foliate engraving. The percussion hammer chiselled. Retained to the stock by 1 side-nail. Overall length 138.5m
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
