Full description
Indian percussion long gun, from the Sind region, c1850. Round iron barrel of Damascus twist construction, chiselled and gilded at the breech and muzzle, the muzzle formed as a dragon's head and inset with turquoise and red stones.The breech formed with a raised flange and incorporating a rear sight; the muzzle with a bead fore-sight. The barrel retained to stock by 8 decorated silver barrel bands (the central band with 2 sling attachment). Iron ramrod wit a decorative tip. Barrel length 91cm. Calibre 7mm. Wooden full-stock with deeply curving (Sind form) butt, this overlaid with decorative sheet silver. Iron trigger guard with 2 iron sling swivels. There is a repair to the wrist using copper plates. Percussion lock engraved with foliate designs. Retained to the stock by 1 side-nail. Overall length 129.5m
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
