Summary
Sheath for a peshkabz dagger. This sheath accompanies the peshkabz with the jade handle. It is made from wood, covered with leather and has silver repoussé mounts. The sheath was probably made in Nepal for a Tibetan market. The design, in gilt, is of a bird; Garuda (which is often depicted in both Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism), on the reverse, there is an inscription in Tibetan. 'A dagger with green jade handle and black leather sheath with silver mounts, partly gilt - Nepalese' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
