Summary
A Victorian aesthetic oak and walnut bureau bookcase, circa 1872, by Cox and Sons, the design attributed to Samuel Nicholl. The crenellated cornice surmounted by three crocketed spire finials. The pair of bevelled glazed panel doors enclosing adjustable shelves, divided by a central rosette-carved buttress palaster with tracery carving and flanked by pierced and foliate carved arcading linked by a pair of turned columns with lozenge paterae decoration beneath. The fall surrounded by a border of strapwork paterae and fleur de lys motifs enclosing a fitted interior. The lower part with a pair of frieze drawers and corresponding linenfold panelled cupboard doors between pierced spindle and tracery decoration carved with vine leaves. The side of the upper section with circular candle stands above pierced tracery angle brackets and open shelves with narrow doors to the rear divided by turned columns. The middle section each with a pierced tracery crest heading a bevelled glassed panelled door. The sides of the lower sections with carved flower filled baskets above asymmetrical open shelves supported by turned columns, on stile feet, applied throughtout with pierced and engraved brass mounts including mythical birds and recumbent hound decorated handles.
