This picture was bequeathed to the 9th Earl of Stamford by a ‘Mrs Churchill’. It was formerly thought to represent the Duke of Marlborough, of whom there was once a portrait at Dunham Massey.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Man in Armour, French School, late 17th century. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young man, standing turned to left, gazing at the spectator, wearing armour and a sword, with a flowing scarlet sash with gold fringe, worn over his chest and his left arm and tied behind with a bow. A scarlet many-bowed jabot and long curled brown wig. His right hand rests on top of his plumed helmet on the table left, his right hand rests on the table which is covered with a red cloth and fingers the bottom of the helmet. Dark background.

Bequeathed to the National Trust with the house, estate and all the contents of Dunham Massey by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896 - 1976)
