Caption
The Madonna, kneels to pick up the Christ child, who holds onto his mother, one foot on the ground and the other still in the cradle. Behind him are the infant St John the Baptist, St Elizabeth and two angels, one of whom holds a coronet of flowers over the Madonna's head. St Joseph sits in the background. This is a 17th-century copy of Raphael’s painting owned by François I, King of France (1494 - 1547) and now in the Louvre Museum, Paris.

A copy after a 1518 painting by Raphael (Urbino 1483 – Rome 1520) owned by François I, King of France (Cognac 1494 - Rambouillet 1547) and now in the Louvre Museum, Paris. The Madonna, clothed in a rose-coloured robe and with a blue cloak over her right shoulder, kneels to pick up the Christ child, who holds onto his mother, one foot on the ground and the other still in the cradle. Behind him are the Infant John the Baptist, Saint Elizabeth, John's mother, and two angels, one of whom holds a coronet of flowers over the Madonna's head. Saint Joseph sits in the background on the right, wearing an orange cloak and with his left hand resting on his chin.
Provenance
Acquired by Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838) and was in the house by 1788 when it was cleaned according to archival records. Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
