Summary
Oil painting on panel, An Unknown Young Man, aged 21, French School, inscribed: NOSCE . TE . IPSUM . A o . 1555 . AETATIS . 21 A young man, aged 21 in 1555, according to the inscription in black paint above his head, sits half-length, slightly to the right, wearing a high-collared black surcoat with the frilled edge of his shirt showing at neck and wrists. He wears a black cap and holds his gloves in his right hand. The first part of the inscription is a Latin translation of the Greek 'Know thyself' which was inscribed in the Temple of Delphi.
Provenance
Brought from Wavendon by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare 6th Bt (1865 - 1947) and Alda Weston, Lady Hoare (d. 1947) between 1894 and 1898. Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
