Summary
Ivory sculpture, Triptych of the Arrest of King Charles I (1600-1649), French School. Dieppe ivory triptych bust of Charles I on a carved ivory plinth. Front of bust opens in two halves (like doors) and inside are further carved figures. Engraved at the base of the bust on top of plinth; ARRESTATION DE CHARLES I. The 'doors' are held on with pinned metal hinges and eight metal pins to attach bust to plinth. Engraved along front of bust at bottom; CHARLES I. Hollow plinth base is oval with four 'legs' supported by four arches and depicting a carved face with horns and headdress immediately above each 'leg'. Underneath base is lined in green baize.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust from the estate of the late George Richard Lawley Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall (1928 – 2001) with the assistance of the NHMF, the Art Fund and donations from members and supporters in 2002
