Caption
Envermeu is not far from Dieppe, in Normandy, where Sickert lived before his move back to England. Sickert became a lifelong friend and colleague of Sylvia Gosse, whose paintings are sometimes difficult to distinguish from her mentor. Evelyn Waugh once described Gosse’s paintings as ‘horrid – all iron bedsteads and Sickert.’ Her work had been shown to Sickert in 1908, and he had encouraged her to learn the art of etching. She later managed the ‘Sickert and Gosse School of Painting and Etching’. She was never a leading figure amongst the established London ‘Groups’, but she was, nevertheless, a noted and important presence.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Church at Envermeu at Night by Laura Sylvia Gosse (London 1881 - 1968). Peter Barkworth has written 'I bought this at Abbot and Holder in the early 1990s. It was untitled and they thought the church might be Spanish or Italian, I can't remember which. I'm pretty sure it is the same church as in Envermeu Under Snow, in the other picture I have by Sylvia Gosse. Envermeu is not far from Dieppe.';
