Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Guitar-player and Woman with a Child beneath a Tree, Franco-Netherlandish School, circa 1770-1780. The figures after Boucher. A narrow vertical panel, the lower quarter containing a young man seated on a barrel playing a guitar, a sleeping dog and a seated woman with a child on the ground. A track leads off to the left where two sheep look on, and some houses can be seen on a hillside. A tall tree grows from behind the figures; the top part of the picture is filled with tree and sky. One of seven paintings set into panels in the wall.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey pictures, drawings etc., the Small Drawing Room, page 128.
