Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Scrope, Mrs Thomas Peter Strickland (1702–1738), English School, circa 1735-40. A half-length portrait in oval trompe l'oeil surround; sitter wears blue robe with scarlet cloak. Mary (1701-37) daughter of Danby 1st, wife of Thomas Peter Strickland. Mary Strickland, née Scrope (1702–38) The eldest daughter of Simon Scrope of Danby-on-Ure, Yorkshire, she was married to Thomas Peter Strickland as his first wife in 1728. She was the mother of all his children: five sons, and one daughter who died in infancy. Her sister Catherine was married to Roger Strickland of Catterick.
