Caption
This is a fragment of a larger composition, which also featured Lady Mary Villiers, later Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, now in the Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh. The original was probably painted for the 1st Duke of Hamilton in around 1636, after the death of Lord Herbert in January that year. Lady Mary Villiers is depicted as Venus, as goddess of Love, a suitable companion for Cupid. Lord Arran was the son and heir-apparent of the Duke of Hamilton.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Charles Hamilton, Earl of Arran (1634 - 1640), as Cupid (a fragment), after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641). The original painting, Lady Mary Villiers, Lady Herbert and later Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, with Charles Hamilton, Earl of Arran (1634 - 1640), by Van Dyck is in the North Carolina Museum of Art Raleigh. This has possibly been cut down - are the remains of her dress visible on the right?
