Caption
The sitter is shown wearing his clerical robes at a time in his life when he served as the rector of Bredon. He and his wife inherited Lacock by chance when his brother-in-law and cousin, John Talbot (?1717-78) died childless.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Reverend William Davenport (1725-1781), English School, mid-18th century. A head-and-shoulders portrait, turned slightly to the right, of the Reverend William Davenport, son of Henry Davenport and Barbara Ivory, nephew and son-in-law of John Ivory Talbot, and husband of Martha Talbot. He is shown in clerical garments, with a short, powdered wig.

Given by Matilda Theresa Talbot (formerly Gilchrist-Clark) (1871 – 1958), who gave the Abbey, the village of Lacock and the rest of the estate to the National Trust in 1944, along with 96 of the family portraits and other pictures, in 1948
