Caption
The sitter must have been a descendant of the Barbara Slingsby who married Sir John Talbot (1630 – 1714) in 1660. We know from an inscription on the back of the painting that it came from the estate of Sir Charles Slingsby, 10th & last Baronet (1824 - 1869). It appears that links between the two families were maintained through generations. The portrait presumably passed to William Davenport Talbot (1764 – 1800).
