Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Talbot (son of Sharington I Talbot and Elizabeth Leighton), attributed to John Hayls (fl. 1651 - d. London 1679), circa 1650. Henry Talbot was the 3rd son of Sharington Talbot of Salwarp (d.1642) and his first wife, Elizabeth Leighton. His brother, as described on the inscription, was Sharington Talbot (d.1677), who inherited Lacock. According to Oliver Millar, 1968, this is almost certainly by Hayls, c.1650. The portrait is close in type to that of his half-brother, George Talbot (P/42), probably by J.M Wright, who was also killed in battle.
Provenance
probably at Lacock since the mid-seventeenth century, and thence by descent; given by Matilda Theresa Talbot (formerly Gilchrist-Clark) (1871 – 1958), who gave the Abbey, the village of Lacock and the rest of the estate to the National Trust in 1944, along with 96 of the family portraits and other pictures, in 1948
