Summary
Oil painting on panel, Still Life of Food, a Jug and Glasses on a Table by Pieter Claesz (Burg-Steinfurt 1597 – Haarlem 1660), signed with monogram A/PCH and dated 1640. An ontbijt (breakfast piece), depicting a table, partly covered by a white tablecloth, on which is laid a blue-and-white ceramic bowl of berries, cherries, grapes and plums, metal plates bearing a cooked crab, a bread roll, a coffee jug and decorative rummer drinking glasses. The perishable food, the knife balancing over the table edge, the butterfly on a vine leaf, and the upturned and overturned glasses show that this is a vanitas image.
