Summary
Oil painting ion canvas, Jeanne Esther Dunz, Madame le Baronne d’Hervart (c.1707-79) by Emanuel Handmann (Basel 1718 - Basel 1781), 1763. A half-length portrait of Madame la Baronne d'Hervart, mother of Sabine, wife of Sir Rowland Winn, 5th Bt. She settled with her husband, Jacques-Philippe d’Hervart, in the town of Vevey in Switzerland in 1734. Sabine was their only surviving child. Understandably, it was with great sadness that Jeanne Esther saw her only daughter depart for England in 1762, following her marriage to young Rowland Winn. As it happened, she never saw Sabine again or ever met her grandchildren, Rowland and Esther.
Provenance
Possibly an heirloom in the collection of Sabine d'Hervert, wife of Sir Rowland Winn, 5th Bt, or possibly shipped to Nostell Priory from Switzerland after Sabine's arrival there in 1762; purchased by the National Trust by private treaty sale from Lord St Oswald in 2010
