Summary
Oil painting on panel, King Henry VIII (1491–1547) after Hans Holbein the younger (Augsburg 1497/8 - London 1543), circa 1800. A small three-quarter-length portrait on panel of King Henry VIII in red-slashed and embroidered doublet. The monarchs, King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I held a special significance for the Winn family. King Henry's dissolution of the monasteries in 1536 led indirectly to their acquisition of Nostell Priory and their ancestor, George Winn made the family fortune as court draper to Queen Elizabeth. Their heads also appear in James Paine's plasterwork in the ceiling of the North Staircase. This painting and the portrait of Elizabeth I with which it was paired (NT 959400), were acquired by Charles Winn from Phillips' auction house in London in July 1869.
