George Booth, 2nd Earl of Warrington (1675-1758), and thence by descent; sold at auction at Christie's, 20 April 1921, lot 48; bought by Lady Carnarvon; Thomas Lumley Ltd, 1951; purchased by the National Trust from Titus Kendall following an export licence deferral, 1998, for £120,000 funded by a grant from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund grant of £35,000, a grant from the National Art Collections Fund of £35,000 and with £25,000 from the Mrs B.C. Whiteley bequest.
